HCC x The Met: Seneca Luxury Candle

$ 65

In celebration of The Met’s exhibition, Before Yesterday We Could Fly: An Afrofuturist Period Room, we invite you to transcend time with a glimpse into Seneca Village. Seneca Village was a vibrant community founded by free black tenants that flourished from the 1820’s to the 1850’s until the City of New York seized the land to construct Central Park. We bring it to life through our SENECA candle.

Fueled by the African belief that the past, present and future are interconnected, the exhibition reimagines Seneca Village in the immersive form of a 19th century domestic interior through sound, storytelling, and a myriad of objects from The Met’s collection.

Inspired by this multi-sensory experience, the SENECA candle transports you to a fragrant, bustling kitchen with top notes of spiced black tea. Through an open window, breezes carry in an aromatic accord of wild thyme and crisp cedarleaf, which can still be deeply inhaled walking through Central Park today. Incense, cade and red clove create a warm aura at the heart, leading beautifully to the resinous, woody freshness of birch and vetiver. Modern, powdery concrete provides the perfect smooth finish, representing the present with an eye on the future, as we observe the exhibition in the continuing cycle of life.

Lightly fragrant

Lightly scented. Not the rich and enveloping sensual scents I’m used to from Harlem Candle but the black tea is soft and pleasant.

A Lovely Scent & Tribute to the Community of Seneca Village

Before purchasing this candle, I wanted to learn more about Seneca Village, so I could really appreciate the intentionality of the notes chosen and absorb the rich blend. This candle is like nothing I've ever smelled before! At first scent, I was immediately greeted by the alluring spiced black tea and then the incense. For me, the candle gives off a warm spiced earthy vibe. It smells like something that would burn beautifully in your kitchen during the daytime or in your living room in the evening. It's a refreshing smell that isn't overpowering and is an excellent compliment to your home when you want to ignite an earthy mood. This candle leaves me feeling inspired to more deeply appreciate the past, cherish the present, and dream bigger for the future. Well done Harlem Candle Co.!

Seneca came to KC!

I love this fragrance. It is the jazz of Harlem meets the jazz of Kansas City.

Seneca for a feeling of being wrapped in velvet and sitting in a night sky

Wow! I normally don't gravitate to deeper scents, but I love Seneca. It reminds me of being tucked into a chair with my fav book, adult beverage (Burgundy, of course), and a fire warming the entire room. There's something sensual and retro about this candle, taking me to a different time, a sacred place, where nature and women rule. Is my fav winter scent so far. Love your candles! They burn evenly and are long-lasting.
